Ginger on November 11, 2015

Ginger is a 12-year-old (June 2003) thoroughbred mare. She is about 15 hand and 1200 pounds. She is technically a grade mare as we don’t have her papers. Ginger was bred at the ranch across the road from Sierra Ranch, LLC. She is owned by Regina Brouse. When Regina entered the Navy she needed a place for her horses to board. We kept Skip and Ginger here at the ranch. Now as Regina enters a new phase of her life she needs to sell Ginger.

GINGER14
Ginger on November 11, 2015

Regina taught Ginger all about riding. Regina rode Ginger bareback, western and English. She used Ginger on her parents ranch and shot off her, and brought home small game on her back. Ginger is up to date on shots. Knows how to load in a trailer. And will give her feet for the farrier.

Ginger is an easy keeper. She stays in great shape on just pasture and hay. Ginger is for sale for $1200 $2000 OBO. Come see Ginger at Sierra Ranch. Please contact Sierra Ranch for an appointment to meet and ride Ginger. We would like to thank Dalia Hibbs who took these great photos. You can see more pictures on the Sierra Ranch, LLC Facebook Page.

Ginger was sold to Katelyn Davis on December 31, 2015. She will stay at the ranch for a bit and will be joining us on trail rides in the future. Congratulations Katelyn.

Jasper

Jasper sold and went to his new home on December 23, 2016.

Check out Jasper 12-15 years old grade 14.3H gelding. $500. No buck. No bite. No kick. Easy to catch. Stands for farrier. UTD on shots, negative coggins. Wormed this month. Teeth/beans done in February. *can be hard to bit* Will ride in a hack or side-pull though.

I picked this guy up from auction back in the spring. I included a pic of him then (skinny & has auction stickers still) as well as pics of him now. There’s a pic of me riding bareback and I have never gotten on a horse bareback until this one. He is very patient and kind and tolerated me wobbling around until I found my seat on him.

I have sold this horse once before and the family that bought him fell on hard times and were unable to keep him, I’d like him to have a forever home.

Don’t message me asking
his age, height or anything else I’ve already put in the ad. Seriously. Cheap horses bring me a lot of tire kickers & time wasters and I don’t have time for that. This is a great horse that needs a great home.

Sebastian

$

SOLD! Sebastian is a 15H 15ish-year-old Grade QH. He is for sale for $700.

Broke to ride, stands for farrier, can be stalled, stands tied. UTD on vaccines, teeth floated in 2016 & beans removed then. current NEGATIVE Coggins.

He can be hard to catch at times, I don’t know his past but he has scar tissue around his neck and hocks, my vet said it looked like someone ROPED HIM while he was running, and caused the damage. He is 100% SOUND.

I’ve ridden him a handful of times, my VERY green 10 yr old daughter rode him in the front yard and controlled him, I walked next to her (first time on this horse) that being said I am NOT saying he is kid safe. He could be with some miles on him, though.

I broke my knee so he’s been off work for quite a while. I need to downsize my herd as I won’t be riding for at least a year. He would need a light tune-up I imagine after being in the pasture so long.

All around good horse. Could be a fun play day horse, I’ve not roped off of him and I don’t have cattle, I was told when we bought him that he had done those things and knew the barrel pattern. But I’ve not done any of that with him myself.

Cute little guy, just have too many in my current situation.

Can come meet him or ride him if you’d like, just have to set up a time when someone else is here to help, as I’m not able to walk.  Text Beth at 918-688-1795

SOLD! Thanks to Brent and Shawna Riley for providing Sie a forever home.

Sie (pronounced ‘sigh’) as he sighs a lot is a 7 yo grade paint gelding that was bought at the Bristow sale in June 2016. He is about 14.1H. He loaded in the trailer to come home from the sale. I have not tried since then. He has been round penned and had a few short rides, since living at the ranch. He needs an experienced rider or someone willing to complete his training. He became the ranch’s horse when his previous owners could not pay board. He needs a home that can train him to be a great riding horse. He is for sale for $500 or best offer. Please and share and help me to find a great place for Sie.

Here is a link to Sie working in the round pen: https://youtu.be/NRDly0CTMCw

Creating Your Life

$

Life on a ranch is very interesting. Growing your own food and food for your animals can be fun and challenging. This blog has always been about how I am learning to grow more and do more with my land.

I was raised more in the city than in the country, but always had some country aunts, uncles and cousins to go visit. We had gardens growing up from time to time. And I have tried gardening in many of the places I lived before owning the ranch. I grow mostly in containers on the ranch. I will post more on that soon. The picture on the right is one night pickings. I also have chickens and get several eggs a day. I have raised meat chickens and turkeys. And will be posting more on that as well.

In 2017 the pasture had only a few horses on it that summer and we had great rain. The back 20 acres made 89 round bales. This year we haven’t gotten the rain and are hoping to get some hay, but are looking for hay from outside sources. Pasture management is tricky and you are at the mercy of the rain to make great pasture.

If you want to follow along on my journey to become more self-sufficient and learn to live off my land a bit more, subscribe to my newsletter in the box to the right. Monthly emails will go out with updates on how things are progressing. I will talk about what is working and what didn’t so that you can learn what to incorporate in your small homestead.

If there is a topic you would like to learn more about, just visit the contact page and drop me an email. I’d love to hear about your adventures.

Container Gardening

$
0
0

Since I have live on the ranch I have tried to grow a vegetable garden in several locations around the property. Even trying at the end of the pool one year since no one could remember to water the garden.

I love using containers for several different reasons. I like the raised bed approach. It helps keep the weeds down. And now the chickens can’t get in the garden as much.

I have a neighbor with a trash pile. I have scavenged black tubs from it for a few years. The tubs are from feeding cows supplements. And one year we found a great old water trough that didn’t hold water anymore. It makes a great container.

Three Sisters Garden

This year I tried a three sisters garden in the trough. Along with some cold weather plants that didn’t make it in the cool weather, but that’s another story. I had heirloom seeds from Mozybeau Farms. (That is an Amazon link and I get a small commission if you buy threw it.) I planted several different things, but so far the corn is the only one making progress.

A three sisters garden is corn in the middle with beans around the corn and squash around the beans. I got one squash before the squash bugs got my plants. My beans are still trying and the corn is sky high.

Filling the Trough

I was worried about the amount of dirt it would take to fill the trough. I added some rocks that were supposed to make a front garden and didn’t. Then I had someone mention that you could add wood to the beds to create a  hugelkultur garden bed. Basically, you place scrap wood. I had wood from a fireplace I don’t use any longer as well as limbs that the wind blew down in the yard. Then manure. I used the chicken litter. I added a couple bags of peat moss on top for the growing area and to start the seeds. Next year I will need to add some additional dirt at the logs decompose.

Add Plants

Here is the tough with the cold weather plants and squash added. The corn and beans were added in the following weeks.

Then it was a waiting game to see what grew well. Some of the broccoli and cauliflower actually made tiny heads. I should have harvested them at that time rather than let them grow a bit more.

We have had a hot dry summer. Even with watering, it has been hard to make the garden grow well.

Squash Bugs!

As I said I got one squash. Then bugs attacked. Here the pictures. I also thought the little bit of rain we had gotten was enough and didn’t water for about five days. and then overwatered.

Follow me on Instagram and see the latest goodies from my gardens and what new things I am trying next.

If there is a topic you would like to learn more about, just visit the contact page and drop me an email. I’d love to hear about your adventures.

Talent and Josh’s Girl in April 2014 – Dalia Hibbs
1147477_10153342698130655_1532750361_o
Talent loves to eat!

Talent has led a hard and easy life. He is from great thoroughbred racing stock. His sire is Indy Talent, but I don’t have his papers or know his dam’s name, so I don’t know his real name. He was born in 2003. We got him in June 2006 at the Tulsa Stockyards sale. Of course being sold as a great starter horse and future hunter jumper.

With such a great racing father, we had our neighbor (who owns Indy Talent) call the past owner and breeder to see why they sold him at the sale. Turns out Talent had a stifle issue from birth and had surgery on it twice to try to correct it.  Since he was lame, they took him to the sale to recoup some costs.

I asked our neighbor why they didn’t just put him down since he had the potential of hurting someone when his knee finally gave way. My ex-husband heard “put him down” and got one of our boarders to buy him from us so I would not “put him down.” I had no intentions of doing this. I know to race folks this is a business and having a foal that had a defect would be something that one wouldn’t want folks to know.

Talent
Talent grazing in September 2013

Anyhow, our boarder has his papers, And somewhere and some time along the way we got all of her horses back, so Talent is a permanent resident at Sierra Ranch, LLC. He has a limp on his back leg that has white on it. It’s more prominent above a walk, but I can pick him out of a crowd at a walk.

Talent has been ridden by the second step kid. It’s just we will not know when that knee will go out, and he will have to be put down. He has lived here many years, and kinda likes the easy life. He is my 1200 pound dog. He will probably stay here until he dies. He could only be used as a therapy animal and not ridden.

Talent was laid to rest on June 6, 2016. His limp was getting much worse and you could hear grinding in his joint, I didn’t want him to break a leg in the mud and muck in the pasture. He is buried in the front pasture with several of his old buddies.
